Turkey will host the African Elephants at the Izmir Ataturk Stadium, The match will take place on the 11th February 2009. Fatih Terim is still battling with Low for Mesut Ozil, he was called up for the friendly but may not attend.Fatih may choose to use different tactics and call up some players that have a good recent form, such as; Sercan Yildirim, he had a succesful first half of the season. He may also call up Gokhan Unal who has caps for the NT already, Volkan Sen is also showing good form and Eren Gungor also has a good defensive record for Kayserispor. Its good to see Hamit Altintop back in the squad, i was a little supprised to see Halil in the squad as he has been on terrible form.

My Prediction: 4-1
I feel that Turkey will score alot of goals this match, i also feel that Estonia will score a dead ball situation as the idiot Volkan will concede obveiously.

Our good freinds at Blick have published a cartoon for the world to see, and I suppose, laugh. It depicts Turkey coach Fatih Terim being affixed to a Doner Kebab spit and being served by a devilish looking Hakan Yakin. Hakan Yakin as we all know is the son of Turkish immigrants who moved to Switzerland back in the day, like hundreds of thousands of other Turks who immigrated to Europe.

First off, this cartoon is blatantly insulting the Turkish immigrants in Turkey by depicting them as people who serve others kebabs. Secondly, Hakan Yakin is a Muslim and the cartoon depicts him wearing a red shirt with a cross in the middle. If it was meant to be a jersy they would have put the Swiss football associations logo instead. Thirdly it depicts Turks fighting other Turks and expects the audience (Swiss nationals) to draw sadistic pleasure in watching their enemies fight each other.

I hate to bring politics to the mix, but I would be failing in my duty if I did not. It’s no secret that anti-Turkish sentiment is very high in Switzerland and that a portion of Swiss openly hate their Turkish neighbors. Not all, but a defined amount that apparently have a voice. In contrast not a single Turkish newspaper or tabloid published anything offensive towards the Swiss people or the national team. Many Turkish fans who were there today at the match reported wide-spread anti-Turkish and anti-Muslim abuse. I wonder if Monseiur Platini and Herr Blatter will do anything about this. Probably not.

I find it very funny indeed when the whole world yells at the Polish for publishing anti-German cartoons but that publishing anti-Turkish cartoons has become accepted. I guess the best response to these cartoons is to crush the Swiss in their own home stadium, in front of their own fans, in front of their own cartoon publishers.

After months of waiting, the day is finally upon us. Tomorrow the Ay-Yildizlar take on one of the strongest sides in European football-Portugal. Without a doubt we are the underdogs going into this but as we learned last year, anything is possible at the big stage.

The squad is pretty much set with an interesting 4-3-3 formation:

                  Nihat Kahveci
Tuncay Sanli-Mevlut Erdinc
Emre-Aurelio-Hamit Altintop
Hakan Balta-Gokhan Zan-Servet Cetin-Sabri Sarioglu
Volkan Demirel

What happened to the glory days only a couple of years ago…..

I guess the squad could have been worse. My only real complaint is that the defense is terrible. Hakan Balta is too slow to get forward and come back and Gokhan Zan makes a mistake at an average of 4 per match. However there are some players that we can rely on.

First and foremost, Hamit Altintop will be key to our gameplan. Hamit’s consistent and hard woring style of play makes him a vital part of this national team. Secondly Emre has to really work hard in the heart of the midfield. The last thing we need is an open gate for the Portuguese to flood through.

In addition we also have some advantages.

For one the Turkish national team has a greater overall team morale than the Portuguese. Their are too many egos and “personalities” that are greater than Felipao. There is also a poorly-kept secret that many of the Portuguese players are sick and tired of Ronaldo’s ways. On the other hand, all of the Turkish players are completely obedient to “Imparator” and all of them wish to work together to bring the team to great places.

At the end of the day, nobody expects us to defeat Portugal. Many people watching the Turkish camp have stated that the Turkish players are very comfortable and have complete confidence in their abilities to get the job done (job meaning advancing to the next round). On the other hand, there will be tons of pressure on the Portuguese to defeat us. And as we all know, pressure causes mistakes and mistakes lead to Turkish counterattacks and Turkish counterattacks lead to goals for the milli takim.

My prediction? A 1-1 draw which then inspire Turkey to defeat Switzerland and Portugal to “work for us” and defeat the Czechs. I see both Portugal and Turkey advancing, in first and second order respectively.

Come on Ay-Yildizlar, let’s show the world what the Turks can do!!!!!
